Rail and Intermodal Transportation SYP 2021
The Rail and Intermodal Transportation Summer Youth Program for 2021 took place during the week of July 12th. We had 22 students from 12 different states, and hosted 7 minority students! We had students from the east coast (MA, GA, NJ, and VA), the west coast (CA), from the south (AL, GA) and the north (MI, MN), plus our usual contingent from the midwest (MI, OH, WI, MN)! Also from PA ... should I include them with the east coast, the north, or the midwest? In any case, the week was a terrific success, in spite of the restrictions placed due to Covid. Our field trips remained in Michigan, and although travel time was somewhat extended we had great support from our hosts at Pettibone Traverse Lift, Eagle Mine, Mineral Range Railroad, Verso Corp, and CN. Oh, and we can't forget our heritage visits with Quincy Mine and the Houghton County Historical Society's Lake Linden and Torch Lake Railroad. With support from the Michigan Tech Rail Transportation Program and the University of Wisconsin-Superior Transportation and Logistics/Supply Chain Mgmt programs we pulled off a terrific set of classroom activities. Our students received and outstanding program ... and comments from their end of course reviews tell the story!
- Traveling the whole upper penninsula to seethe remaining railroad industries at work was amazing!
- We dove deep into how railroads work and it was a hands on experience!
- I loved running a train simulator and teaching others how to use it.
- Building model train tracks ... it got my mind refocused on math.
SYP 2020 Was Canceled ....
